Every summer of our childhood, we'd pack up and drive from D.C., where my grandparents lived, and load up into the silver Oldsmobile, to head down to Nags Head. Along the way, we'd stop at fruit stands, picking up peaches, berries and vidalia onions. My brother and I would sing along to Glen Miller and play "pediddle" at dusk, until we'd arrive at the hotel in Chattanooga. Nana would unpack her LL Bean tote, where her boiled eggs, carrots, celery, bottle of vodka and tonic awaited happy hour by the poolside. My Gumpa would shuffle his cards endless times for games of solitaire until we headed to a buffet dinner. I loved watching my Nana open her baby blue cosmetic case that had locks, like opening a treasure chest, filled with gold tubes of lipstick and compacts.
