It takes a team to raise a songbird! On June 19, Bird House keepers celebrated the hatching of a male Baltimore oriole chick. Animal care staff closely monitor newly-hatched chicks to ensure that they are healthy and gaining weight. When this chick had some trouble packing on the grams, keepers teamed up with Zoo nutritionists and veterinarians to offer supplemental feedings. Today, the chick is doing great! In addition to tracking the chick’s weight and growth, keepers trained mom to voluntarily perch on a scale. They were able to monitor her health while she was incubating and caring for her chick. The information keepers have learned about nesting material, breeding behaviors and chick needs will help staff better understand migratory songbird husbandry. #WeSaveSpecies ?? The Bird House is closed as we transform the historic 1928 building into Experience Migration, a first-of-its-kind attraction that immerses visitors in the annual journeys of western hemisphere birds.
