Caye Tittmann (@thecayelife) doesn’t fit the stereotypical definition of a rapper/producer. With catchy tracks like “LA Life,” the 19-year-old University of Southern California music student has earned props for being a rising MC. But the Boston native, who was once on a path to becoming a tennis pro, says hip-hop isn’t his only interest. “I grew up listening to reggae, rock, and jazz. I feel like it’s all coming together into one genre with my music - which is dope. I wouldn’t want to limit myself to rap.” The upbeat freestyler credits a middle school hip-hop class for jumpstarting his writing skills. But Caye’s influences are many. His idol Bob Marley is part of the mix. So are Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Chance, The Rapper, cultural elements of his Filipino heritage, and the sound of his main instrument: the steel drums. As a young producer dabbling in EDM and hip-hop beats, Caye never thought to rap over his own tracks. But a few years ago, his cousin, the tropical house producer Thero, convinced him otherwise. Thero posted the results on SoundCloud, and the fan reaction was immediate. Today, in the midst of college classes, Caye has an anticipated debut album, ‘Pink Tree Paradise,’ on the way. This month, as part of our #Vevodscvr emerging artist program, Caye came in and rolled through with, “With U,” a new track about wanting to know what it’s like to walk in someone else’s shoes.
