If historians note Aug 11 1973 as HipHopCulture's dob. Then I think I should take the liberty to remember its funeral which was Aug 3rd 1995.
When you millennial's hear cats my age talking about the "real hip hop"....the Mason-Dixon Line was drawn THIS day: the 1995 #SourceAwards. Everything about this day was wrong man...Next to #ComingToAmerica I don't think another black gathering has given me so many quotables in my life: I often yell #TheSouthGotSomethingToSay (Outkast defending their honor) when arguing. When I feel slighted (industry, coworkers, girls I like) I'm always starting my rant with #TheEastCoastDontLoveDrDreAndSnoopDogg!!???!!!! #LetItBeKnownThen!!! (Type Snoop Rant Source Awards) And of course the all time classic: #AllInTheVideosAllOnTheRecord (when I accuse someone of being selfish I pull that Suge Knight gem out occasionally) besides those quotes and hearing the entire #BrownSugar album for the first time there was nothing enjoyable from that night. We should have ideally been celebrating a successful year: classics were being made daily. Innovations galore. MCs were blowing minds. Producers were on the rise---but after that night? It all changed. And not for the better.
I won't hesitate and say that I wasn't moved by music since then (psssh Dilla was just STARTING his slow rise to power)....but it just wasn't right no more....the ORIGINAL peace unity love & having fun motto got lost on my generation. ---anywho *raising a toast ??to that innocent yet not so innocent time.
