From the Aug. 4, 1940 issue of LIFE, 77 years ago this week—VACATIONS: American's Summer Travels Take Many to Grand Canyon. According to LIFE, "Now the summer climbs to its mid-season peak. Over the warm land moves a host of Americans on vacation. More than ever dreamed they could, vacationing Americans travel. They get away from their year-round life by going to see something different...About 300,000 vacationers get to the Grand Canyon and stand on the rim wondering at the great earth gash."
