I went to @nyutisch with #PhilipSeymourHoffman who would've turned 50 years old yesterday coincidently #WoodyHarrelson's birthday as well! They are both mic older than me. Phil was besties with #Director #BennettMiller at #NYU. Years later I wanted him to be in my film #RedDragon but thought it might be difficult because he and Bennett both ignored me at film school. I offered him the part of #FreddyLounds and I thought for sure he was going to pass. Instead of passing he called me directly and said he appreciated the offer of Freddy which was a smaller part but was only interested to be the lead character, Francis Dolarhyde. I told him why I thought he was a better Freddy but didn't reveal that I already had #RalphFiennes in mind for the part of Dolarhyde! I ended up getting Ralph and Phil ultimately took the part. Phil was so committed to supporting other actors in a scene with him that his off camera performance was sometimes better than his on-camera performance. When this would happen I would ask him if we could turn around and shoot him again and he would have a meltdown. He would say "Why? Just tell me Why Brett.... what did u not get when the camera was on me?" I told him I heard something that was different and I wanted to try it. He would wrestle me for awhile but ultimately would always agree to do it again. On one particular day that I turned back around on Phil #AnthonyHopkins showed up on set unannounced on his day off. I got worried I thought he came to set to tell me he was quitting because I did too many takes. Instead he said that he didn't have scenes with Phil and if it was ok he was there to observe Phil working because he was a big fan of his and he wanted to watch him. What a huge complement coming from a #master like Hopkins. I didn't tell Phil until after the scene was done because I knew what a hero Hopkins was to him and I thought it might throw him off. When I told him he was humbled. Phil not only was a brilliant actor but was a beautiful person with a generous and kind spirit. Most soulful person I had ever met. Happy Birthday Phil. #RestInPeace
