According to LIFE, "From the land of the sphinxes an unprecedented S.O.S. is being sent to the whole world to prevent a cultural catastrophe that would obliterate some of civilization's most spectacular monuments. At Aswan on the Nile River the Egyptians are constructing a new dam that will inundate 300 miles of the fabled Nubian valley to form a lake 200 feet deep."
