These Costa Rican variable harlequin frogs are in amplexus, the mating process wherein the much smaller male grasps the larger female with its legs in order to be in the right place at the right time to externally fertilize her eggs. They’re named for their many different varieties of colors, ranging from black, green, red and all the way to golden orange like these two.
