I realized a quarter of the way through this painful album that this was gonna be our last go round w #RichardNichols. He was our day one. He was our night and day. Our Peter Grant. Brian Epstein. George Martin. Quincy Jones. Suge Knight w Robert Novelly's intellect. A curator's curator. Rummaging all the crazy ideas in my brain & giving the best ones the green light. Going through Tariq's razor sharp mind & doing the same process. And mixing the two. Finally taking all of his education and knowledge of jazz, hip hop & life and adding it to the mix (sorry for the tacky self promotion, but if you truly loved Rich then know that the charm of #MoMetaBlues is indeed Rich's footnote rants spread throughout the chapters like his version of VH1's #PopUpVideo). By the time we got to #TheUnraveling (second to the last song) I realized this wasn't our 16th album, but Rich's last words & testament. Deep into his chemotherapy & unable to verbally communicate in the way that we were used to (he pretty much approved all performances, song structures, mixing, art literally from his bed at U of Penn) I remember raising a fuss over "the man with no future" line and the whole tone of all the songs (I joked with him "let's just call this album Suicide Pact")---and then that's when it hit me me that we were Rich's voice. Aside from a few press previews & us performing this entire album 3 times--I've buried this album in my mind. But for the last three years on the anniversary of his transition I give it a full listen trying not to cry as the music reveals more and more to me. It was necessary for Tariq & I (well Shawn too & everyone else in the family circle) to take the training wheels off and ride til the wheels fall off. This past weekend at the Calgary show all I kept thinking was "damn...I'm in a packed stadium w 17,000 people who actually knew they were coming to see us, what would Rich think of this madness!??"--lol this was his plan all along. I'm just realizing. He would nonchalantly just be like "that's what's up" & shrug like it was Nathan. Rich didn't believe in an afterlife so I'm not gonna "angel wing" him. But I sense he still here. 7/17/14
