August 11, 2010. I was in Las Vegas, my home town, for The Expendables Planet Hollywood Premiere. The studio put me up in this ridiculous, opulent, multi-roomed suite overlooking the entire city. My Mom was flown in, I was going to appear on the Red Carpet with some of the biggest international film stars of my lifetime with my son by my side. It could not have been a more jubilant time.
Just as I am getting my make-up done my soft spoken, too calm to have 3 kids under the age of 8, girlfriend from Arizona called to check in with me.
This time though, Maya's voice was strained and pitchy. It was Ronan. Her youngest son. He had been diagnosed with Neuroblastoma Cancer. A very aggressive form of Cancer with a dire survival rate.
Suddenly, perspective hit me and the flashing bulbs, fancy international movie stars and spectacular views left me cold and hollow. None of it mattered anymore. My friend was hurting, her family forever changed. (Continued in next post)
