The children of slain New York City police officer Miosotis Familia, twins Peter and Delilah Vega and Genesis Villella, participate in Familia's funeral at the World Changers Church in the #Bronx, #NewYork on Tuesday. Familia was writing in her memo book at the end of her shift early last Wednesday when a gunman walked up to the police vehicle where she was sitting and fired.

A sea of police in blue uniforms filled the theater and the street outside to pay tribute to the 12-year officer and former health care worker, who was later buried at a nearby cemetery. One of 10 children of immigrant parents, she was the first person in her family to go to college and had always wanted to be a police officer, her family said.

Familia was posthumously promoted Tuesday to detective. To her family, she was also a "protector, defender, guidance counselor, spiritual adviser ... philosopher, philanthropist, theorist and mother," said her 20-year-old daughter, Genesis Vilella.
