A #leopardSeal stealthily on the hunt for prey in the icy waters of #Antarctica. It's an isolated time of year when these seals can easily catch fledgling penguins heading out to sea for the first time, switching from there normal diet of krill. Like most marine animals on the #antarcticapeninsula krill is the primary source of food. In recent years krill fishing has become a heavy industry for humans, used primarily for omega 3 supplements. The issue at hand is that krill feed nearly an entire ecosystem almost exclusively, meaning that we are walking a delicate line by pulling out millions of tons per year. The situation is further complicated by receding sea ice, which is where krill feed on bacteria. Melting ice directly contributes to ocean sea rise, less food for krill and increased temperatures globally. It's a sticky situation with a lot of unanswered questions. Now, more than ever, we look to the leadership of #CCAMLR, the council responsible for managing the marine living resources in the waters surrounding Antarctica, to make the right decisions on how Antarcticas oceans are fished responsibly.
