The arts and architecture patron Maire Gullichsen, born 1907, would have turned 110 years today. In 1935 she co-founded Artek, became the first chair of Artek’s board of directors, and remained a driving force behind Artek’s art activities throughout her life. Maire introduced modern and abstract art to Finland and founded Helsinki’s Free Art School (1935) and Galerie Artek (1950). As a young woman she studied painting in Helsinki and Paris, she remained a practicing artist all her life. Her ideas, activities and achievements in the fields of ethics, aesthetics and of the international modernist movement can’t be overstated. Maire Gullichsen, we salute you!
