Fosters Family Stories Submission from Becca: Hi! I am Becca and I was adopted at birth. Growing up, I always knew I was adopted, but my feelings on adoption changed over time. When I was little, it felt more like a fantasy story; maybe I was a princess sent to live a more down to Earth life. But as I got older, I learned that background surrounding my adoption was not all bright and happy. I became confused, mad, I felt alone; and felt constantly plagued by the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding adoption. The phrase I constantly heard people say "Maybe you are just adopted" made me feel that something was wrong with me, an outcast, and an enigma. When I was 16 and really struggling to accept myself, a friend told me about the show The Fosters. I decided to watch it and for once saw adoption, foster care, and the feelings around it represented as being a normal part of the world. I grew to accept myself, feel normal, gain confidence; so I started sharing my story and talking about adoption. The more I did this, the more people I met who were adopted and has faced the same things I had. I became proud of who I was and last year decided to audition for a TEDxTalk. I was given a 17 minute slot where I talked about adoption with my story, the stereotypes and issues, and the truth. As I did this, people watched it and all around my community people would come up to me to ask questions and say how much they had learned, and how they had accepted it. Now I am 18, heading off to college, and an individual who is proud to say I am adopted. I credit The Fosters for starting this journey.
