It was 114 degrees on Day 1. During scouting of our prison set, Director Dwight H Little told me that he doesn't want any top light or light coming from above. Everything side light for the prison. I was THRILLED! The perfect fuel to push the envelope! Big throws of light, design, etc. I had 6k HMI pars spread out & placed around our set strategically so It can favor the camera language and give the prison a designed, yet natural 1978 look. Sky panel was my choice for tight areas. After a solid couple of takes; The "one more for safety" take was suggested. This time something special happened. We brought out a butt dolly. I'll never forget when Dwight told me; "Let them take you on this one.... feel it. We will see what happens". I walked away smiling because by now, Im so connected emotionally to the tone of the scene. Thank god for my long legs!!! Since I'm tall, I was able to crab around the action with out compromising the frame. It was perfect to say the least because I could get really close and personal to the action. Since I knew where the actors land, it became a ballet. I attached myself to the scene in a emotional level. I have a concept already of how the actors will react and where the story is taking us in this particular scene, so I focused on telling the story using the butt dolly and how I can enhance the storytelling through visuals. After the scene was done, you just felt the magic in the air. So great to look at these 2 pics taken by @bradfordhunterwray . It reminds me of; "The good old butt dolly shot!".
