WHO? Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, who authored one of the most iconic images of art history – The Great Wave. His prolific oeuvre spanned prints of sublime landscapes and mythological creatures; paintings of beautiful women, flora and fauna; sketches of deities and erotic figures; volumes of illustrated novels; and manuals for aspiring craftsmen.

WHAT? A new exhibition at the @大英博物館, Hokusai: Beyond the Great Wave, showcases work from the last 30 years of the artist’s life – arguably his most fruitful – following his 60th birthday, a milestone which, in Japanese tradition, marks the auspicious beginning of a new life.

WHY? Today Hokusai’s art pervades popular culture, and in the era of Impressionism it was Japanese craftsmen like him who influenced the likes of Manet and Van Gogh; Degas famously hailed Hokusai as ‘an island, a continent, a whole world in himself’.
