I was doing a film called "Coastlines" and at that time (still, actually) I was always carrying my Leica. I wanted to be a photo journalist so badly. On my way to work I used to pass an old folks home. One weekend I decided to stop in and told them I was doing a freelance story called "The Last Generation". Somehow they let me come back and shoot 15 or so rolls of film over a two day period. Film: when you had to wait weeks until you actually saw what you captured. When I finally saw the photos I was dumbfounded. Look at her: what is she thinking -- her history, a life. The Last Generation. This photo makes my life buzz. It makes me feel. It's a painting. It's someone's daughter, grandmother, friend. Her hands have touched grass, her mind has dreamt, her belly giggled. I said, "Ma'am, do you mind if I take your picture?" And she posed just like this and didn't move for 5 minutes, and when she did I knew it was time for me to leave. "Thank you, ma'am." A painting: a living art.
