Traveling should include moments that make us pause, think and feel. This was one of those moments for me. I passed by this man walking his elephant along the road in Sri Lanka, it was so casual like people in the states with their dog. But I couldn't get this photo out of my mind, I took it last year and shared another version on IG from farther away but it didn't tell the entire story. ⠀
At first glance it was easy to get excited, an elephant being walked on the street! As I got closer I noticed the blood on the ear, the chains, the hook and the man obviously wasn't keen getting his photo taken. But I also am aware that I don't know the story of this elephant or this man. These elephants have been used like we use heavy machinery in construction for hundreds of years. I don't know where they came from...or where they were going. ⠀
It was just a split second I captured on my journey, but one that has stuck with me.
