This is what the future of Lagos, Nigeria could look like, according to Nigerian-born, Brooklyn-raised artist Olalekan Jeyifous. Inspired by the self-organization of the city’s informal settlements, Olalekan wanted to create art that sparked debate about how we live today. His series, “Improvised Shanty-Megastructures,” features imaginative architectural renderings that challenge how we think about urban development in rapidly-growing megacities like Lagos, which has an estimated population of 21 million. “I hope it gets people thinking about these communities, less as this aggregate, poor slum and more about the individuals who live there,” he says of his project.
