The year was 1986 and we were on our annual summer trip in Nags Head, with about 15 family members crammed in two wooden beach shacks. I can remember it like yesterday, my Nana and my mother, my aunties and I, reading books in the sun, spraying Bactaid on burns, Final Net in my hair, making chicken salad sandwiches and bloody Mary's, playing endless hours of cards and scrabble, listening to Glen Miller (Violent Femmes on my Walkman) boiling shrimp in old bay steamer and flying kites at sunset. These ladies would have the gift of gab into the wee hours and I remember smiling every time while trying to sleep, at my Nana who would howl with laughter and my mom would gasp "you don't say" after a lull of hushed whispers. I'm so grateful for you Nana and Mom, for the strength and fire inside, that you instilled in me to go and find my own way, and celebrate my independence- it was easier because I always knew I had you to come home to ❤#mothers #daughters
