A harpy eagle at the @thelosangeleszoo.
This eagle is most commonly found in the Amazonian forests of Brazil and Peru and is considered one of most powerful birds in the the Americas. Their hind talons are the largest of any living eagle, reaching 3-4 inches long-- the same size as a grizzly bear’s claw. These birds are carnivorous and prey on tree dwelling mammals like monkeys and sloths. Although the harpy eagle is currently listed as near threatened on the #IUCN Red List and exist in reasonable numbers today, their habitat is steadily disappearing and this species will not survive if the rate of deforestation in the Amazon does not slow down.
