Orson Welles was a mere 25 years old when he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in "Citizen Kane" (1941), a film many consider the finest American movie ever made. It was also his screen debut as an actor. The film was a critical portrayal of one of the most powerful men in the world, publisher and tycoon William Randolph Hearst, whose castle still stands near the Pacific Ocean in Central California. In 1941, Hearst used his power in an attempt to stop the film from being released, even alleging that Welles was a Communist. But not only was it released but it was showered with nine Oscar nominations and Welles went home with a Best Screenplay Oscar that he shared with co-writer Herman J. Mankiewicz. In 2015, nearly 75 years after its release, "Citizen Kane" was screened for the first time at Hearst Castle as part of the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival. Attendees paid $1,000 each to view it in the castle's private theatre.
