In a tradition dating to the 15th century, 3,000 members of the many confraternities will march in a silent procession today on Good Friday in Enna, Sicily, Italy. Their masks, called a capirote, is of Spanish origin dating back to the inquisition. Today, the capirote is the symbol of the Catholic penant: only members of a confraternity of penance are allowed to wear them during solemn processions. The face is covered as a sign of mourning for the death of Christ. On Easter Sunday the hats are taken off in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.
