"I overheard some Marines jokingly saying, “I haven’t roofied someone in the past year or so. It’s time for me to roofie someone.” And I told him I was extremely upset by what he said. I said, “Imagine if someone joked around and their target was your sister, or your wife, or your daughter. Imagine how you would feel.” We joke too much. We make rape and sexual assault too much of a joking matter. And I think we do it because it’s a way for society and the Marine Corps to cope, to try to get around the seriousness of the matter. And it’s unfortunate because it’s not a joking matter, it’s serious. After I shared that with him, he realized that it’s not a funny matter. Rape and sexual assault jokes dehumanize an individual and that’s not fair. I don’t care who you are, Marine or not, that’s not fair. Our Marines deserve better." -Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps
