20 years ago this week, #ChasingAmy was released. The third motion picture I ever made, Amy happened after the critically reviled #Mallrats was thought to have killed my film career. The leads of Amy were not well known at the time so the folks in charge of @miramax didn't wanna cast them. I turned down a 3 million dollar budgeted version of the flick with more well-known actors and suggested we do the flick for $250,000 with my cast instead. #HarveyWeinstein said yes and suddenly, @samosier had to figure out how to make the flick for so little. None of us had anything to lose, so we poured our all into telling the story of a guy who was too hung up on his girl friend's past. When the flick debuted at #sundance in 1997, it got a standing ovation. Amy would go on to win 2 Indie Spirit Awards (screenplay and best supporting actor, @jasonlee) and #joeylaurenadams received a Golden Globe nomination for her stellar performance. I love this flick not only because it saved my movie career, but also because it made me a better person: I was very much the Holden character, obsessed with my girl friend's past. Making that movie rid me of that childish nonsense for good while making people think I might achieve cinematic greatness one day (which most folks now rightly assume I'll never reach, but for me, was reached with @tuskthemovie). During Amy, @benaffleck slept on my couch, playing my video games and reading my comics. The book he read that most impressed him? Frank Miller's #thedarkknightreturns. 2 decades later, he'd look exactly like the main character in that "classy book" (as he described it) when #batfleck began in @batmanvsuperman. But back in 1997, nobody dreamed the chase for Amy would last this long and lead to all the weird, wonderful places we've all been to since then. #KevinSmith #miramax #benaffleck #bluntmanandchronic #indie #film #1997
