This is a standout week in our Zipp at the Spring Classics Throwback Thursday Series. This week we pay tribute to one of the all time greats, the recently retired Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland, and his breakthrough week in April 2010. He won the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix back to back aboard Zipp 303s. This accomplishment also was a monumental moment in Zipp’s own history, as it marked the first time that carbon wheels were ridden to victory in the two most famous cobbled classics. Several years before that Cancellara had been part of a group of pros from the CSC team to test prototype carbon wheels on the Paris-Roubaix’s Forest of Arenberg sector, quickly breaking every test wheel. The failure sent Zipp engineers back to Indianapolis with renewed determination to design a carbon wheel to excel on the cobbles. The result was the 303 Cancellara rode to his Flanders and Roubaix victories in 2010. The lessons learned from designing the 303 helped lead to the next generations of Zipp innovations, including Firecrest and NSW rim technologies.
