Eight more days until the exhibition 'PETER LINDBERGH. FROM FASHION TO REALITY’ opens at the Kunsthalle München. This installation is devided into eight sections: 'Supermodels', 'Couturiers', 'Zeitgeist', 'Dance', 'The Darkroom', 'The Unknown', 'Silver Screen' and 'Icons’. To accompany the exhibition, TASCHEN has published a 472-page book, edited by Thierry-Maxime Loriot, in which he explains: "Peter Lindbergh absorbed strong influences from early German cinema, and also dance and ballet such as German cabaret performer Valeska Gert or Sergei Diaghilev and the Russian ballet. Creating a visual history of dance in the 20th and 21st centuries, he photographed many series inspired by the work of famous dancers, entertainers and choreographers, but also reminiscent of fine arts works. For example, his 1997 image of Spanish dancer and choreographer Blanca Li, whose falling movement on a Thonet bentwood chair reminds of Aristide Maillol’s 1938 sculpture L’Air. Years before, the American model Kristen McMenamy was also photographed impersonating Vaslav Nijinsky in a tribute to the ‘Siamese Dance’ from the 1910 Les Orientales, or in a George Balanchine homage. There was also Naomi Campbell as Josephine Baker for her first shooting with Lindbergh; a tribute to Martha Graham with pop icon and former dance student Madonna; his close friend Pina Bausch with pieces like Viktor; American choreographer and dancer Carolyn Carlson; the Berlin Staatsballett and the New York City Ballet; Polina Semionova, principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre; and Spanish dancer Joaquín Cortés. In all of these filmed works Lindbergh captured the tensions of movements and performance, the diversity of the multiple representations a singular body can engage with this art form.
