Before meeting Colin, before blogging… I worked 9-5 at a bank and after work, taught inside the maximum security unit of a Juvenile Detention Center in San Francisco. As a teacher there, one of the biggest challenge I saw with my students was literacy. My goal was to teach towards the GED so that they could test out. Deep down I always hoped that when they got released they’d have their GED to help them with employment, or if they got transferred to prison, they could continue their education if they wished. We worked day and night on basic writing fundamentals and reading comprehension. Equipped with a stronger foundation of reading and writing, my students scored higher and higher on their exams. Working inside the Detention Center taught me a lot. A product of the foster care system myself and teaching incarcerated youths who also came from the foster care system, I saw how broken the juvenile justice system is first hand and how education can shape the future of youths in care.
