#MovementMondays Junot Díaz is an award-winning writer. He immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic with his parents at the age of six. In 2008 Díaz received The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. In 2012, he received a MacArthur Genius Grant. According to the MacArthur Foundation, Díaz work features “powerful insight into the realities of the Caribbean diaspora, American assimilation and lives lived between cultures." Additionally, Díaz "creates nuanced and engaging characters struggling to succeed and often invisible in plain sign to the the American mainstream." In 2017, Former President Barack Obama mentioned Díaz as one of a group of writers whose books sustained and inspired him during his two terms. Díaz once said that “Artists are not cheerleaders, and we’re not the heads of tourism boards. We expose and discuss what is problematic, what is contradictory, what is hurtful and what is silenced in the culture we’re in.” Díaz is currently the fiction editor at Boston Review and a Professor of Creative Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). #MovementMondays #junotdiaz
