A woman of many firsts, Shirley Ann Jackson was the first African-American woman to earn a PhD (nuclear physics) from the famed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (#MIT), and the first woman and African-American to be named president of #Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Jackson's research has been instrumental in development of important inventions such as fiber optic cables and touch tone telephones.
