March 31 is International Transgender Day of Visibility, an annual holiday dedicated to celebrating our siblings in the trans and gender non-conforming communities and raising awareness of the unique issues—and discrimination—faced by members of those communities. TDOV, as the day commonly is known, was established by trans activist Rachel Crandall in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of any holiday acknowledging and celebrating living members of the trans and GNC communities; Crandall cited the frustration that the only well-known trans-focused holiday was Transgender Day of Remembrance, which mourns the murders of trans people.
