MYLA RUNS HER MOUTH PART 3: BE THE BITCH ? Last night I watched @lenadunham's gut-wrenchingly accurate, stunningly written episode of Girls, "American Bitch". A bottle episode, featuring only two characters and focused solely on a discussion of the issue of sexual consent and the role that power imbalance plays in sexual harassment, watching "American Bitch" was overwhelming for me. The supreme accuracy of the writing, the subtle manipulations included, the final conclusion, it was triggering, and had me recalling handfuls of painful and humiliating incidents in my own professional history. Which leads me to today, and my deep desire to let all you girls know (young and old, but mostly the young ones, who are maybe not as empowered or are in more vulnerable career positions) that it is ok to be the bitch. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ENGAGE IN ANYTHING SEXUAL OR ROMANTIC WITH ANYONE IN A PROFESSIONAL SETTING OR RELATIONSHIP, EVER. NEVER. I can't even list on one hand the amount of times that men in positions of power have used their standing to make advances on me. Propositioning me in both subtle and obvious ways while shooting, over a breakfast meeting, or in a studio visit. Men have tried to kiss me, touch me, hold my hand, asked me very personal and inappropriate questions about my relationship, about my sexuality, even about the way I achieve orgasm. These men are art collectors, curators, photographers, editors, major magazine publishers, gallery owners. It is easy to feel like it is your fault, and often times I felt that way. "Well, we were shooting nudes." "Well, I guess I did make some off-hand comments about sex that maybe made him think this was ok." "Well, my work can be sexual, so I guess he assumed I would be open to that." And moreover there is a fear at play, that you will be destroyed or will lose out if you don't play along or laugh it off. This is a powerful person with a lot of pull. You are just a young girl at the start of your career. Will your agency be mad at you? Will the photographer ever work with you again? Will you get dropped from the magazine or client? Will you forever be known as a bitch? CONTINUED ⬇️
