At 91, Ella Brennan still feeds #NewOrleans. It doesn’t matter that she never learned to cook. A typical evening for Miss Ella, as she’s known, begins with cocktails. They’re delivered from @commanderspalace, her family’s restaurant next door to her mansion in the city’s Garden District. Drinks are often followed by dinner, also from Commander’s, and wine. Her preference: Champagne and distinguished whites from the Côte de Beaune because, as she puts it, “I’m too damn old to drink cheap wine.” Miss Ella is the matriarch of an extended family of restaurateurs that employs nearly 1,400 people. She helped create New Orleans’s reputation for culinary excellence, and she’s made maintaining it a personal responsibility for more than 60 years. Now, she’s the subject of memoir and a documentary that tell the story of a hard-charging, no-nonsense businesswoman who excelled in a male-dominated profession decades before gender imbalance in the restaurant industry became a hot issue. (And it just so happens that she dropped out of business school after deciding that “I wasn’t going to type for any man.”) Visit the link in our profile to read more, and to see more photos by @edmundfountain.
