Man, Chaka Khan and I go way back to the disco days, and...we were jamming! I'll never forget producing the Rufus/Chaka record and calling my brother, Rod, for a song. He was on a tight schedule with his band, Heatwave, and wasn't sure if he could get it done, but after a long conversation, he agreed, and as usual...he delivered. And that's when we entered into the era of “Masterjam!” It was just one of those feel good, make you shake your booty type of records, and Chaka was. A. Pro. An absolute powerhouse.
And then Chaka, Ray Charles, and I redid “I'll be Good to You” about 13 years after I did the original with The Brothers Johnson, and it became a #1 R&B hit again! You don't expect that to happen when you're just making music because you love it...
