We often like to think of wilderness as being untouched by humans but in reality we were shaping our landscapes long before the industrial or even agricultural revolutions.

Spending time in the Makuleke Contractual Park in northern Kruger (Pafuri triangle between the Luvuvhu and Limpopo rivers) really brought home the dynamic way, even in recent history, humans have been a part of the story of 'wilderness areas'. The Makuleke people were removed from the area by the South African apartheid government in the late 60s and it was returned to them in 1998.

They decided to leave it as part of Kruger and contract it out. @ecotraining is one of the operators in the area and has been part of finding ways communities living on the edges of protected areas can benefit from conservation.

Especially chuffed to meet Jerry, a local Makuleke tracker studying to be a trail guide and several candidates from the community applying to do their one year guiding course.

Thanks to @ecotraining and @wild.ark for hosting us and for the way you're contributing to the ongoing engagement of people and the wild.
