I posted a video yesterday showing Vayetse's movement in slow motion and saw a few comments stating he looked thin. Well here is another video of Vayetse (He's 8 years old today) showing his magnificent physique off. Many people have grown accustomed to grotesquely overweight captive lions. You can see piles of fat especially on the belly and chest and sometimes it even looks like the belly is dragging on the ground or the lion has short legs. This is an easy way to identify captive bred lions from their leaner meaner wild cousins. It's also a way to identify captive lions that have been 'canned' hunted in pictures & videos, along with other tell tale signs like no facial scarring and sometimes perfect teeth that aren't worn. Lean lions are healthier, fitter, more energetic, live longer and get less depressed. We assessed our animals' diets many years ago and I regularly chat with @adriantordiffe who has done extensive research into carnivore diets. I think we as humans like to overfeed animals as a sign of compassion when all we are really doing is killing them with kindness. We battle obesity at the sanctuary especially with the ladies on contraception and the older animals hence another reason for the enrichment walks and the continual rotation of the animals between enclosures. Keeps the mind and body active which ultimately translates to good health. #fatcats #leanmachine #carnivorediet #healthyeating #obesity #SaveHabitat PS The skin flap on the belly is called a belly fold and all male lions have it. It helps in keeping skin loose fitting which in turns helps give way under tension such as in a fight.
