The sound of #TommyLiPuma was so distinct & consistent. Always using the same masterful musicians cats like #RonnieFoster #PhilUpchurch #RalphMcDonald #PaulinhoDaCosta #LarryWilliams #JerryHey #ErnieWatts #JoeSample #MichaelFranks and MOST importantly #AlSchmit as his engineer--together Schmit & Lipuma would form such a "breezy" L.A. Jazz sound that most critics dismissed this as #MOR bland & bad for jazz. But I personally can't subscribe to this point of view. Lipuma helped give #GeorgeBenson #BarbraStreisand #AlJarreau their best success under his leadership. We also can't forget him running the #BlueThumb label for #ABCRecords giving us #ThePointerSisters #HughMasekela #TheCrusaders #IkeAndTinaTurner #DaveMason #GaboSzabo #GerryRafferty ----so much more. Look I'm a sucker for clean sound, Lipuma had some of the best ears during his reign (let's not forget his extremely crucial role w #AndreFischer in orchestrating the comeback for the ages in #NatalieCole's 10xs platinum #Unforgettable project.
