What do Frida Kahlo, Zadie Smith, and wildflowers have in common? They’re all inspirations for painter and illustrator @ktsmail, the Scottish-born subject of our weekly #ShineTheory. Katy (as she’s known IRL) posts her finished paintings and prints along with works of progress in her dreamy, light-drenched studio. “Sometimes Instagram functions as my sketchbook; a way to test and work out ideas and trains of thought,” she says. Her favorite subjects are “flowers and complicated women;” affixed with bubblegum-pink tape to the walls of her studio, her paintings evoke the post-art-deco girlishness of Maira Kalman, or the bucolic femininity of Georgia O’Keeffe. (You may also recognize Katy’s work from her illustrations for @tanyataylor’s S/S ’17 collection.) “It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to appear perfect,” says Katy. “In high school I had an art teacher who told me I was bad at drawing.
