Someone (whom sadly I don't know and cannot personally thank) sent me the exquisite novel "Someone" by Alice McDermott. An acknowledgement to SC is in order--for it is because of your book exchange that I magically received it last week (along with many other divine finds)! I have just closed the pages and find myself sitting with a reverence and a wonder I have not experienced in awhile. It is a book about ordinary, quotidian things, an ordinary quotidian someone, a woman whose life was not vast in scope, but certainly vast in (albeit quiet) feeling. The characters constellating her world the same. There is an unsentimental pragmatism to this woman's Irish-Catholic in Brooklyn war-time outlook, but also a larger-than-any-religion kind of mysticism that stretches so far into the unknown. I'm stunned in the best kind of way. And I am grateful for the power of literature to do this kind of thing. It gives me a simple hope.
