I can think of no country that gave Queen Mothers more power or influence than the kingdom of Benin (in modern day Nigeria). At the end of the 15th century a war broke out between two brothers for control of the kingdom. Their mother, Idia, sided with the son named Esigie and gave her political counsel, medical knowledge, and mystical powers to help him win the war. In return for this, Esigie created the position Iyoba or "Queen Mother." The Iyoba would bear the king's first son and then have no other children. Her whole life would be devoted to raising this king, thus molding the views and opinions of the future ruler. The Iyoba effectively decided which direction the kingdom would go.

Kings would wear carved ivory masks depicting Iyobas during ceremonies to protect the kingdom from malevolent spirits. In fact, this mask from the 16th century is believed to depict Idia herself. She was, after all, the first Iyoba.
