Or mocked me for djing with a laptop when it actually belonged to the dude playing after me
Or said i'm too pop or not cool enough
Or that I'm a singer not a dj
And to every sound guy who's ever asked if I needed help setting up
Or asked me if I've tried turning it off and on again
Or assumed I was the DJ's girlfriend
Or the waitress
To any girl who's ever experienced something like this
Or been put off by stories like these
Or a lack of role models because of the ongoing giant under representation of women producers, djs, mixers, sounds engineers, a&R scouts, record label executives... And it's not just music... Its everywhere
To every woman who's ever had their confidence knocked or their skills or expertise questioned because of the gender
At a time when I just moved to the states and the government is attacking fundamental women's rights
It's important to remember how far we've come but also how much we still have to do
To all the people that participated in the Women's March to keep that momentum and that sense of action going
International women's day is for women and men everywhere to realise women's potential that isn't being achieved or acknowledged
Also dedicated to my mum the strongest bravest kindest most caring woman I know who raised me to be strong and independent and confident
To my female friends who have poured their energy into me when I needed it most without ever questioning or complaining
And to ME for surviving almost a decade as an independent artist in charge of my own decisions, artistry and destiny
And for having my heart broken into more pieces than I imagined possible and to come through it realizing my own strength, for learning how to be myself again and not being afraid to share this.
For all the power bitches, working girls, nasty women, girl bosses, babe stations...
