"The more basic the color, the more inward, the more pure."—Piet Mondrian, born today in 1872, was a central figure in the Dutch De Stijl movement. This group of artists and architects embraced a simple, logical style based on forms such as the straight line, the square, and the rectangle, and they employed a limited palette of black, white, and the primary colors. The De Stijl artists sought to create a universal aesthetic language that would help achieve a utopian society. Mondrian's works "Composition" (1929) and "Composition No. 1: Lozenge with Four Lines" (1930) are currently on view in Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim.
