Thirty years ago today Boogie Down Productions dropped "The Bridge Is Over," a dancehall-flavored diss track laid down by Keyboard Money Mike and Ced Gee of Ultramagnetic MCs, changing the hierarchy of hip hop forever. Mass Appeal reached out to Kool DJ Red Alert, the DJ who premiered the track on his groundbreaking 98.7 KISS FM mix show. "It made quite a stir," says Red, who actually made a cameo on the record. BDP had the audacity to record the track at Power Play Studios in Queens, not far from Queensbridge. Once NYC heard that record, the Bridge Wars were effectively over. "The whole thing was fun," Red Alert stresses. "It was all about the microphone and who demolished who."
