There are at least two primary ethical issues that should be considered in conservation and wildlife photography according to @doug_gimesy:
1. What impact does taking the photograph have on the animals - both at the actual time of capture (e.g. stress, changing behaviour), and in the future (e.g. does the image' use help the animals or the species)?
2. Is the photograph honest?
The answers to these two questions is not always simple. However Doug believes that a good place to start is to keep in mind the virtues of empathy, gentleness, compassion and transparency. Or if you forget those, just ask 'What would a good person do?' #mynikonlife
