I got a message today that made me share my mindset with this kid. He was in love with Freerunning, but lost motivation. All his friends were learning tricks faster than him and he didn't know what to do. This is my mindset that protects from that natural feeling (almost) all the time: • I understand how you feel, and this can be very hard. The trick is to have fun doing it, without comparing yourself. • I do two things that are contrary. I am super competitive, but I'm also happy to loose. When I train all I think about is being the best and beating everybody. It makes me give 100%. • I also tell myself "it's okay, if it doesn't work". I know ALL I CAN DO IS GIVE 100%. It might be enough, or not. I can not change what talent I have, my height or what my history is. So as long as I give 100% it's completely fine, if I fail or I don't become the best. • I practice to focus on myself for happiness. It's okay to compare myself to see what's possible, but it doesn't need to affect my emotions. • I don't try to be better than somebody else, but to be better than I was yesterday. If I learn, I'm happy. Even if it's slow or sometimes even stops for a while. • Especially in sports you have to honestly look at yourself and understand where you are. People might have better genes, or start with more talent. This doesn't mean you can't beat them if you work hard CONSISTENTLY. • It might mean you have to spend 1-3 YEARS working on boring basics. Strength, Flexibility, balancing, rolling, small jumps. One day you will get there. You have to go slow now to go fast later. • Doing sports there will be difficult times. If you are talented or not, there will be a time without progress, you loose skills you had before, or get injured. • Talent picks up things easy, but they might not learn the mental skills to push through hard times. So they stop or only do what they are already good at. • People with less talent START in a difficult time. They can learn the mental strength to deal with this slow and boring part. One step closer to reach their maximal potential. That's maybe not world's best, but the best YOU can be (and have fun on the way). That's worth it to me ?

I do two things that are contrary. I am super competitive, but I'm also happy to loose. When I train all I think about is being the best and beating everybody. It makes me give 100%.

I also tell myself "it's okay, if it doesn't work". I know ALL I CAN DO IS GIVE 100%. It might be enough, or not. I can not change what talent I have, my height or what my history is. So as long as I give 100% it's completely fine, if I fail or I don't become the best.
