Coretta Scott King welcomes her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a kiss after leaving court in Montgomery, Ala., on March 22, 1956. Dr. King was found guilty of conspiracy to boycott city buses in a campaign to desegregate the bus system, but a judge suspended his $500 fine pending appeal.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott began after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man. It ended in December 1956, when the Supreme Court ruled that segregation on public buses was unconstitutional.
