From the Aug. 12, 1957 feature story—The Gentle Lemurs: Odd Assortment of Primates Has Evolved on Madagascar. This particular lemur ran with the following caption: "LANGUID LEMUR, the red-ruffed variety, relaxes in the morning sun, a habit which causes the natives superstitiously to believe that it worships the sun and therefore sacred. Wildest and largest (four feet long) of the lemurs, it fills the deep, quiet forests with full-bodied roars which make it seem deceptively fierce."
