HOW TO BE AN ACTIVE ALLY TO IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES: For those of you who have reached out to me- and to each other- online, looking for ways to help support those in your community directly affected by changing immigration and refugees laws, here are some ways you can help. Together with @libbyvanderploeg (and feedback from @gershj at @theirc - thank you!) we created this video to walk you through 8 simple things you can do to help your local community, from knowing the law and supporting legal/bail funds to recording interactions you see and connecting with your local immigration and refugee groups to offer assistance like rides and childcare for those who need to attend meetings and hearings. It's easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless, but there are SO many things all of us, in any part of the country, can to do be of service. The key is to plug in locally and listen- your local community may have different needs than these, so if you focus on keeping your mind, heart and ears open, you'll be on the right path. If you don't watch the full video, here's the gist: plug into your local chapters of @theirc @aclu SURJ, local churches or legal aid groups to see how you can offer the services (and others) detailed in the video. For anyone who isn't familiar with how much vetting refugees go through to come to the United States, here is a helpful link about the process: http://nyti.ms/2jKX3V4. #givebackspeakup
