Happy birthday #BillViola! A pioneer of new media art, Viola creates immersive video and sound environments, pursuing timeless themes of spirituality, life, and death. In the two-channel video, "The Crossing" (1996), dripping water from above gradually becomes a torrent, overwhelming a figure, whose form is eradicated. On the reverse side, the same figure approaches, this time to be consumed by rising flames.
