"Ecological design is a way of integrating human purpose in nature's own flows, cycles, and patterns"- Van Der Ryn & Cowan, Ecological Design, 2013. A highlight of building this deck with my eldest brother was saving this little Pacific yew tree by cutting a hole for it in the decking. Local First Nations used the extremely strong Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia) wood to make bows and canoe paddles. More recently, the Pacific yew was found to contain a highly effective chemotherapy drug called taxol. This is one of many examples that urge us to preserve the biodiversity of our forests. #ecologicaldesign #biodiversity #clayoquotsound #reflection
